Tips for Cleaning After Rodent Removal

Tips for Cleaning After Rodent Removal

As much as we try to keep rodents out, it’s always possible that they can find their way into places they shouldn’t be. The most common rodent infestation is mice, but other rodents can also find their way in. After rodent removal, it is important to clean and sanitize the affected area.

Take a look at these tips for cleaning after rodent removal.

Always Protect Yourself

You never know what type of diseases a rodent was carrying. This means that you need to protect yourself during the cleaning process. At a minimum, you should be wearing gloves to protect your hands as you clean.

It’s not a bad idea to also wear protective eyewear and a face mask during the cleaning process. These things just ensure you don’t accidentally come into contact with or breathe in anything that could potentially be harmful.

The areas you are cleaning likely have urine and other waste contaminating them.

Safe Cleaning

The next step is to clean up any waste and trash left behind. Scoop up anything that is solid and put it in a waste bag immediately. It’s best if you are able to scoop everything up first and then follow up with cleaning.

Use some sort of scoop, paper towels, or other materials. Just be mindful that you also will need to sanitize and physical items you use for the process.

Dispose of anything necessary in a garbage bag. Be sure that bag is properly sealed and tossed out when you finish. Use a cleaner to remove any urine or other messes left behind. Again, be sure to dispose of or sanitize any cleaning materials.

Sanitize

Sanitizing the area is a step you absolutely cannot skip. Some people use bleach, but you simply need to be sure to use something to disinfect and sanitize appropriately. If rodents were present, they likely left behind bodily wastes.

Disinfection and sanitization are important for your health and safety. You need to kill any germs that could be left behind. In the CDC’s guidance on handling rodent messes, they recommend a disinfectant or a bleach and water mixture.

Disposal of Items After Rodent Removal

When you get things cleaned up, be sure to dispose of anything that cannot be properly cleaned or disinfected. You should securely tie and toss out garbage bags that have any affected items in them. Never leave them in your regular trash can. They should be disposed of immediately.
